2 00 1 The contribution of Quasars to the Far Infrared Background

چکیده
Recent observational results obtained with SCUBA, COBE and ISO have greatly improved our knowledge of the infrared and sub-mm background radiation. These limits become constraining given the realization that most AGNs are heavily obscured and must reradiate strongly in the IR/sub-mm. Here we predict the contribution of AGNs to the IR/sub-mm background, starting from measurements of the hard X-ray background. We show that an application of what we know of AGN Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) and the IR background requires that a significant fraction of the 10-150 μm background comes from AGNs. This conclusion can only be avoided if obscured AGNs are intrinsically brighter in the X-rays (with respect to the optical-UV) than unobscured AGNs, contrary to “unified schemes” for AGNs, or have a dust to gas ratio much lower (≤ 0.1) than Galactic. We show that these results are rather robust and not strongly dependent on the details of the modeling. Subject headings: galaxies: active — X-rays: diffuse background — infrared: galaxies

Obscured Active Galactic Nuclei and Obscured Accretion
Most of the local active galactic nucleus (AGN) population is obscured and much of the Xray background originates in obscured AGNs. The contribution of obscured accretion to the growth of massive black holes is discussed here. The recent identification of significant samples of the X-ray sources that dominate the X-ray background intensity has shown a redshift peak at 0.7–0.8, rather than the r...
متن کاملRadio through X-ray Spectral Energy Distributions of 38 Broad Absorption Line Quasars
We have compiled the largest sample of multiwavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasars to date, from the radio to the X-ray. We present new Spitzer MIPS (24, 70, and 160μm) observations of 38 BAL quasars in addition to data from the literature and public archives. In general, the mid-infrared properties of BAL quasars are consistent with those of non-...
متن کاملISO continuum observations of quasars at z = 1 - 4 ⋆ I . Spectral energy distributions of quasars from the UV to far - infrared
Eight luminous quasars with −30 < MB < −27 at z = 1.4 3.7 have been observed in the midand far-infrared using ISO. All the quasars have been detected in the mid-infrared bands of ISOCAM, while no far-infrared detections have been made with ISOPHOT. SEDs (Spectral Energy Distributions) from the UV to far-infrared have been obtained while supplementing ISO observations with photometry in the opti...
متن کاملA Study of Quasar Absorption Line Systems with IRAS
A survey of quasar absorbers was conducted using the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) database. Quasars with known intervening absorption-line systems and broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs were selected primarily from the Junkkarinen, Hewitt & Burbidge catalog (1991). Of the 570 quasars with IRAS data, 52 showed 3 or better detections in at least one band in SCANPI analysis. The origin of ...
متن کاملA 1 . 2 mm MAMBO / IRAM - 30 m Study of Dust Emission from optically luminous z ≈ 2 Quasars
We report 250 GHz (1.2 mm) observations of redshift 1.8 < z < 2.8 optically luminous (MB < −27.0), radio quiet quasars using the Max-Planck Millimeter Bolometer (MAMBO) array at the IRAM 30-metre telescope. Nine quasars were detected and for 26 quasars 3σ flux density limits in the range 1.8 to 4 mJy were obtained. Adopting a typical dust temperature of 45 K, the millimeter emission implies far...
